Caring for Zanzibar

At Salama, we believe providing holistic development opportunities for young children provides a foundation on which strong futures can be built. That is why we have partnered with the Zanzibar Pre-School Madrasa Association to support community run pre-schools in Zanzibar.

Since 1991, more than 1,000 teachers and community committees have been trained by the Zanzibar Madrasa Resource Centre to organise, build, and manage pre-schools that offer holistic curriculums teaching English, literacy, numeracy and problem solving.

As of 2007, this has benefitted over 13,000 children on Unguja and Pemba islands, which together constitute Zanzibar.

Salama donates 10 percent of its annual income to the Zanzibar Pre-School Madrasa Association, an independent group that provides guidance and support to pre-schools that have “graduated” from direct support from the Zanzibar Madrasa Resource Centre.

The money is used to purchase class room materials like paper, pencils, books, desks; playground equipment; and cover the costs of maintaining the school structure and sanitation facilities.

When you tour with Salama, you are not only connected to the people and places of Zanzibar by professional guides at affordable rates, but also help local children get a head start in life. You are caring for Zanzibar by letting us care for you. That’s the Salama difference.
